He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the whole wild world in His hands.
He’s got the whole wild world in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands.
This song was going through my head yesterday as the realization that the race for the US Presidency was pretty much down to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Yes, I know that Bernie Sanders is still in the race, but so was Hillary Clinton in 2008. I don’t want to seem like I support either Clinton or Sanders, but I can read the numbers.
My intention today is not to write a political piece, but to address what is going on in current events. As Christians, we cannot just turn a blind eye to what is happening in our nation. At the same time, it is very un-Christ-like to berate the chosen candidates. As a Christian nation, our chance to let our voice be heard was at the polls, NOT in social media after the fact criticizing the pick that was contrary to our liking.
However, the posts I have been reading and that my wife has been reading to me that have been written by Christians have all been very negative in tone. This past Sunday, prior to the Tuesday primaries, our pastor said that, “it really doesn’t matter who we elect as president because Jesus is still our king.” To that, I say “AMEN!!” Come November, the American people will probably elect either Donald Trump or, barring unforeseen circumstances, Hillary Clinton. When that happens, we must remember what the Bible says about who our leaders are, and how we are to treat them:
“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves…Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.” (Rom. 13:1-2, 5-6 NASB).
When this passage says to “be in subjection to,” what the Greek means is, “to subject oneself, to obey; to submit to one’s control.”
I see 3 very important things in this passage that we all need to pay attention to:
- God is in control (v. 1)
Every leader who has ever been placed in a position of power has been placed there by God. Whether anyone sees God’s plan or how He is working behind the scenes, He is there. What about Stalin? Hitler? Nebuchadnezzar? God was right there.
- Rebellion is against God (v. 2)
But you may say, “I am not against God, I am against this leader.” Once again, who put the leader in place? Now, there is just cause for civil disobedience, and the Bible does discuss this, however that is a different discussion for a different post. It is just important that I make note of it so that no one is saying that I advocate the blind obedience to the every whim of a leader, no matter how immoral it may be.
- Government officials (Kings, Presidents, Senators, Governors, Mayors, etc.) are God’s servants (v. 6)
This is the role that God has chosen for them. It is not my duty or yours to tell Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton or whoever that they are acting within or outside of the will of God. God may call one of us to be in that roll, but it is not up to every single Christian, and it certainly is not up to us to air out our opinions on Social Media. Our duty is to set the example for the world around us by:
- Being obedient to our leadership no matter how we feel about them on a personal level
- Pray for our leadership on a regular basis
- Refrain from bad mouthing, mud-slinging and overall berating them on social media, or any other forum
Finally, I would like to return my attention back to the song I opened up with. Back in 1986, Christian Rock band Petra did a song called Whole World. It is based on the one we all know and love. For some reason, that song was running through my head yesterday. I had to look up the lyrics. Wow. Even though there is a cheesy 80s rock quality to a lot of them, there are some of the words that just knocked my socks off! We do need to remember that NO MATTER WHAT, our KING still sits on the throne and is FOREVER in CONTROL!
Hearts are falling left and right
Children fear this planet’s plight
Fatalistic fears abound
And take their toll without a sound
But through the vague uncertainty
Comes a bold assurity
This world is under sovereignty
Divinely ordered destiny
He holds this world together
With the word of His power
Safe within His hands
‘Til its own appointed hour
He’s still got the whole world in His hands tonight
And only He knows where the sparrow lands tonight
And nothing in this world can stop His plans tonight
‘Cause He’s still got the whole world in His hands
In His hands tonight
Humanistic lies lament
The holocaust is imminent
Doomsday prophets in the news
Predicting who will light the fuse
The fate of His creation
Isn’t subject to a man
The final consummation
Is according to His plan
He’s still got you, He’s still got me
In His hands tonight
